About Barbara

Barb is a certified Kripalu Yoga teacher who has been practicing for 20 years. She is a physical educator at Monroe Community College having taught fitness and health classes for 27 years.

“My first Yoga class in 1993 felt like a competition of who was most flexible. Of course that competition was in my own mind. I had yet to learn the principle of Ahimsa (non-violence, do no harm, refrain from comparison, and be gentle). I was a physical educator and coach with a strong back ground in exercise physiology – no pain, no gain. I liked the practice but I was always striving.  In 1995 I was fortunate to be mentored in the Iyengar style of Yoga. The emphasis on alignment made sense to me given my background in athletics. It was at this point that I incorporated postures into my phys ed classes and then began teaching Yoga classes at MCC. Unfortunately I continued to strive for the perfect pose. All that changed in 2003 when I attended the teacher conference at Kripalu Center in West Stockbridge, MA. That’s when I learned to integrate Ahimsa and let go of perfectionism. I fell in love with Kripalu Yoga and completed my Kripalu teacher training in 2005.”

Barb’s classes are moderate to vigorous. She keeps in mind the gentleness of Ahimsa, the value of self-inquiry and alignment, and the awareness of each student’s internal wisdom, coloring it all with a sense of humor. She is committed to making Yoga accessible to everybody

“It gives me great joy to share the practice.”

Barb currently teaches at Yoga with Estelle on Saturday mornings, 8:30 to 9:45 AM. Suggested donation is $11 to $15. She offers private Yoga sessions, retreats and workshops throughout the year.
